FAQ / Support

Some common questions about the App are listed below with the most popular questions first.

If you can't find the answer you're looking for here, send an email with a detailed description of the issue, your device model, what version of the App you are running, and a screenshot of the App (instructions) and I will answer it personally. Please be patient while waiting for a response, I am a one-person operation and I try to get back to users as soon as possible. But, sometimes it takes a while.

Why are prices slow to update?

There should not be a delay in updating within the App. However, the more symbols you have the longer the updates take.

iCloud syncing does not work.

It actually does. All devices sharing data via iCloud MUST have the SAME iCloud account. This is how iCloud works. Make sure all your devices are using the same ID and PASSWORD for ONE iCloud account (Device Settings -> iCloud). Also make sure that Documents & Data (Device Settings -> iCloud) is turned ON and that StockWatch is set to ON within Documents & Data.

I try and add a symbol and it says that it already exists. But it doesn't.

This could be a bug after an import of previous data. In version 1.0.2 the ability to override this error will allow you to add the symbol.

How do I use currency functions?

You don't have to if you don't want to. The functions were made for users who hold positions in multiple currencies and want to see those values converted to a specific currency.

If you prefer the 'old' way that StockWatch handled currency (which was none) you can leave each portfolio, and Main Currency (in Settings) at USD or No Conversions.

Please note that all Last Trade Pricing comes into the App in the currency that they are traded in.
For example: A symbol from the Australian Market (.AX) will be priced in AUD already. If you only have AUD holdings, there is no need to utilize currency conversions.

To use conversions, set your Main Currency (the currency you want all portfolios converted to) in the Settings screen. For each Portfolio in the Portfolio list, you can tap 'edit' and the 'gear' button to access Portfolio properties and change that portfolio's Currency. Now each portfolio will convert into their respective currencies and be translated into your Main Currency.

In version 1.0.2 you can turn off currency conversion. This will mimic the way the previous StockWatch handled currency.

If you set any portfolio to a currency, then YOU MUST set a Main Currency in Settings.

Examples:

To convert multi-currency portfolios to USD:
Portfolio #1: EUR
Portfolio #2: GBP
Portfolio #3: CHF
Main Currency: USD

To convert multi-currency portfolios to GBP:
Portfolio #1: EUR
Portfolio #2: GBP
Portfolio #3: CHF
Main Currency: GBP

To convert AUD portfolios to USD:
Portfolio #1: AUD
Portfolio #2: AUD
Portfolio #3: AUD
Main Currency: USD

Everything is the same currency (USD):
Portfolio #1: No Conversion
Portfolio #2: No Conversion
Portfolio #3: No Conversion
Main Currency: No Conversion

Everything is the same currency (GBP):
Portfolio #1: No Conversion
Portfolio #2: No Conversion
Portfolio #3: No Conversion
Main Currency: No Conversion

My imported data is wrong, missing items, or very old.

New versions of the older StockWatch apps have been updated and now you can manually package up your data for import into Next Gen.

Go to Settings -> "Package Data For Next Gen Transfer". After that, open Next Gen go to Settings -> Previous Generation Data -> Import.

I try and add a symbol but it says it already exists, but it doesn't.

This could be a bug after an import of previous data. In version 1.0.2 the ability to override this error will allow you to add the symbol.

Are different currencies supported?

Yes, over 150 worldwide currencies.

How do I transfer my old StockWatch data (from older versions) to Next Gen?

There are multiple ways to do this in Next Gen. If you used the previous versions of StockWatch (non Next Gen) the App was constantly encoding and saving your data to your device's keychain. You may have also utilized the Sync Service to save your data. The data saved to your device's keychain will always be more up-to-date than anything on the Sync Service since it recorded every data change.

If you used older versions of StockWatch and wish to import your keychain data, keep that App on your device until you have transferred your data.

1. When you launch Next Gen for the first time, the App will check for that keychain data and prompt you to import it.

2. To manually import the keychain data at any time, go to the settings screen and select Recover from the Previous Generation Data choice.

3. To manually import your Sync Service data at any time, go to the settings screen and select Import from the Legacy Sync Service Data choice. You will be prompted for your Unique Identifier.

My quotes are not updating!

This is a bug for users who have over 100 symbols in their Watchlists and Portfolios. This bug was fixed in version 1.0.2.

How do I record sales transactions?

Next Gen has sales functions within the App. Simply go to your Lots screen and select Sell. Here you can set your sold Price Per Share and allocate shares from your various holdings. To access previous Sales, go to your Portfolio Listing and select Sales History.

I searched for a symbol, but it says 'No Results Found":

The app has an internal database of symbols and sometimes it does not get updated with new symbols right away, or sometimes we miss some when we update it. But, you can watch any stock, regardless of the internal database, if the symbol can be found on Yahoo Finance.

Go to: http://finance.yahoo.com/lookup and search for the symbol or name. If Yahoo has data for it, it can be tracked in the App.

If you know the Yahoo formatted symbol:
Search in the App for the symbol. If your symbol search did not return any matches, but you know that the symbol is formatted to Yahoo! Finance, just tap the row that says 'Add Anyway?' and the symbol will be added to your list and the most recent quote will be retrieved.

How do I track Commodities?

You just need to know the Yahoo formatted symbol. For example, the symbol on Yahoo Finance for Soybeans January 2014 Contract is SF14.CBT

The symbol search might not return any matches for futures symbols. If that happens you can manually add the symbol by tapping the row that says 'Add Anyway?' and the symbol will be added to your WatchList/Portfolio and the most recent quote will be retrieved.

How do I sort the rows in my Watchlists and Portfolios alphabetically?

There is a sorting function on the top navigation bar next to the Edit button. You can sort by Symbol, Last Trade Price, Price Change, Percent Change, Volume, or Your Order. Your Order can be created by tapping Edit and re-arranging the rows manually. To re-arrange: tap, hold, and move the "three grey lines" icon. When you are done, just tap "Done".

How do I take a screenshot of the App?

You can take a screenshot from within the App by pushing the Home button and the Power button at the same time. After you do that a screenshot will be saved to your device's Photo Library. You can send that screenshot to me from the Photo Library app.
